An inversion happens when temperatures in the valley are colder than they are higher on the mountain — a weather pattern that’s surprisingly common in Jackson Hole. On inversion days, you might notice a layer of fog or clouds hanging low over the base area while the sun shines brightly above on lifts like Après Vous, Thunder, or Sublette. It’s one of those magical moments when the higher you go, the warmer it feels.
To prepare, dress in light, breathable layers that you can easily adjust as you ride higher. Start your day with an extra mid-layer or puffy at the base, then stash it once you hit the sunshine up top. If it’s too cold to linger in the Village, head to Piste Mountain Bistro or Off-Piste Market at the top of the Bridger Gondola for a warm lunch with a view — or enjoy a mid-mountain break at Casper Restaurant where the sun often breaks through before it does below.
Inversions are part of what makes skiing in Jackson Hole so unique — they turn a cold morning into a bluebird day just a few thousand feet up.
